📘 Unit 1: Fundamental Concepts (Easy Notes)
1️⃣ Number Systems
A Number System is a way to represent numbers using a set of symbols and rules.
🔹 Types of Number Systems
- Decimal (Base-10): Digits 0–9
- Binary (Base-2): Digits 0,1 (Used in computers)
- Octal (Base-8): Digits 0–7
- Hexadecimal (Base-16): Digits 0–9, A–F
Exam Tip: Binary is most important for numericals.
2️⃣ Sign & Magnitude Representation
In this method, the MSB represents the sign:
- 0 → Positive number
- 1 → Negative number
Example:
+5 → 0 0101
−5 → 1 0101
3️⃣ Fixed Point Representation
In fixed-point representation, the decimal point position is fixed.
Used for: Simple arithmetic operations in digital systems.
4️⃣ Complement Notation
🔹 Types
- 1’s Complement: Invert all bits
- 2’s Complement: 1’s complement + 1
Example:
Binary: 1010
1’s Complement: 0101
2’s Complement: 0110
Most used: 2’s complement (for subtraction)
5️⃣ Codes in Digital Electronics
- BCD (Binary Coded Decimal)
- Gray Code
- ASCII Code
Use: Data representation and error reduction.
6️⃣ Basic Logic Gates
- AND Gate
- OR Gate
- NOT Gate
Logic gates are building blocks of digital circuits.
7️⃣ Boolean Algebra
Boolean Algebra is a mathematical system used to analyze and design digital circuits.
🔹 Postulates
- Closure
- Commutative
- Associative
- Distributive
🔹 Important Theorems
- Identity Law
- Null Law
- Idempotent Law
- Complement Law
- De-Morgan’s Theorem ⭐
Exam Tip: Theorems are frequently asked for 5–10 marks.
