Mathematics 1 (1004N)

Unit 1 – Trigonometry (त्रिकोणमिति)

Trigonometry:

Trigonometry is made up of two Greek words – Trigonon and Metron.

Angle:

An angle is formed by two rays having a common endpoint (vertex).

System of Measurement of Angles:

Angles can be measured in three systems:

1. Sexagesimal System (Degree System)

  • Full revolution = 360°
  • 1 right angle = 90°
  • 1° = 60′
  • 1′ = 60″
  • Example: 45°30′12″

2. Centesimal System (Grades System)

  • Full revolution = 400g
  • 1 right angle = 100g
  • 1g = 100 minutes
  • 1 minute = 100 seconds

3. Circular System (Radian Measure)

  • Based on arc length of a circle
  • Full revolution = 2Ï€ radians
  • 1 right angle = Ï€/2 radians

Conversion:

Degrees → Radians

Angle in radians = Angle in degree × Ï€ / 180

Example: 60° = 60 × Ï€ / 180 = Ï€ / 3 rad

Radians → Degrees

Angle in degrees = Angle in radians × 180 / Ï€

Example: 2 rad = 114.59°
